MT. RUSHMORE REACTS TO INAUGURATION OF DONALD TRUMP

REFLECTIONS ON THE MARCH
Gloria Steinem in her own words. Six compelling things our fearless leader said in D.C. on Saturday.
Three generations weigh in. I marched with my daughter Abigail and 17-year-old granddaughter Molly, whose honest reactions to the march, posted this morning in The Forward, moved me deeply. Molly's piece is linked to parallel essays by Abigail and me.

Amazing photos of marches all over the world. Historic NY Times pictures of the crowds from Boston to Boise; from snowy Fairbanks to sunny Honolulu, from Melbourne to Macau (South Coast of China); from on board a ship in Antarctica to downtown; Wilmington, N.C., Cheyenne, WY; Prague, Nairobi, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Memphis, Capetown, Colorado Springs You name it, we were out in droves. Check out the marvelous, funny, declarative, plaintive, creative signs.
Best sign seen in D.C. "Make American great again like it was last Thursday!"
ER is with us. Eleanor Roosevelt's statue in Manhattan's Riverside Park as it looked on Saturday
ACTIVISM
We marched; what's next? Frances Fox Piven suggests we, "Throw Sand in the Gears of Everything" and tells us how. A practical, provocative guide .
Cops in Whitefish, Montana posted a mezzuzah on police headquarters in solidarity with beleaguered Jews. Positive activism by an institution of the state deserves to be acknowledged. I called yesterday to thank them. You can too.
Snowboard company funds its employees' trip to the march. Donna Carpenter, CEO and co-owner of Burton Snowboards, extended the offer to all female employees of her company, as well as any men who wanted to tag along. She paid for two nights in a hotel and up to $250 in travel costs from Vermont to D.C. If you're in the market for a snowboard, buy a Burton. Support progressive corporations.
FILM
Best documentary in years: "13th" from Ava DuVernay, Director of "Selma." The title, "13th," refers to the 13th amendment. Here's the trailer. Find it on Netflix or in a theatre near you.

Understand what's happening. Peter Dreier explains why the word "fascism" applies.
And so it begins! Take a look at what has already been deleted from the White House website.
The Inauguration vs. the March. In his NYTimes OpEd, Charles Blow contrasts Trump's message with the message of the March. Best line: "The Enlightenment must never bow to the Inquisition."
Anita Hill says Trump's election is disappointing for feminism. But it's not the final word.
NYC FUNDRAISER FOR SENATOR KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND.
My husband Bert and I are hosting a fundraiser in our Upper West Side apartment for New York's indefatigable and highly effective Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who's been working so diligently for gun registration, first responders health care, LGBT rights, prevention of sexual assault in the military and on college campuses, among many other issues. Among our other co-hosts are Arlene and Alan Alda, Gloria Steinem, Janet Dewart Bell, Sarah Jones, Marlo Thomas & Phil Donahue, and Anna Deveare Smith, all of whom hope to be there in person. Of course, the Senator will be here to speak and respond to your questions.
The price of admission is not cheap. $1000 per person and above. This is because Kirsten has to raise $3 million in three months to stave off a challenge from a conservative Republican. (Rumor has it they're trying to convince a Trump son to run.)
If you'd like to attend, let me know ASAP because our living room is filling up fast.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
