LETTY COTTIN POGREBIN NEWSLETTER #87 AUGUST 31, 2020

I had an assortment of news items lined up to send you this morning -- many of them about Get Out the Vote initiatives -- but after I read Wade Davis' devastating piece in Rolling Stone on "The Unraveling of America," it all seemed pointless. For the first time in my life, I've lost hope in the power of democracy, decency and reason to beat back debasement, hatred, and corruption. I'm afraid we shall not overcome.
Last week's grotesque Republican convention, the Trumpers' odious attempts to ignite a race war, the degradation of the postal service, the refusal by the Director of National Intelligence to give Congress any further in-person briefings on election security and foreign interference, and the Republican establishment's collusion or silence in the face of these heinous acts -- to name just a few recent developments -- left me in despair. Davis' piece put it all in a larger context and tipped the scales into hopelessness.
Read his analysis and weep. Then please tell me how you think we're going to turn this around.
