PERFECT POEM FOR THIS MOMENT
Sometimes
by Sheenagh Pugh
Sometimes things don't go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadet
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail,
sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.
A people sometimes will step back from war;
elect an honest man; decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.
Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen: may it happen for you.

*This essay by Francine Prose, which captures how it feels to wake up from a 4-year nightmare, got me thinking about why, until the election, nobody and nothing could stop Donald Trump. It's true. Until we exercised our vote, we couldn't stop him from debasing our democracy, insulting women, ethnic groups, races, disabled people, cities, prime ministers, entire countries. We couldn't stop him from separating parents from children, praising white supremacists, fomenting violence, firing responsible staff members, ignoring experts, lying about Covid and letting nearly a quarter a million of us die from it We couldn't stop him from rewarding corrupt, autocratic leaders or keeping a Supreme Court seat open for ten months. We couldn't stop him from being the worst possible role model for our children. So here's my question: Why were we so powerless, and how can we reboot ourselves or our system to insure that we never again find ourselves impotent against evil?
A lot of damage can be done between now and Jan 20. Keep your eyes on the prize. Stay strong.
